A Song A Day: Myracle Brah, "Getting Over Delusion"

JULY 17, 2017

“GETTING OVER DELUSION” (WRITER: ANDY BOPP)

ARTIST: MYRACLE BRAH

RELEASED 1998 ON LIFE ON PLANET EARTSNOP LP

It’s one thing to make a song that sounds "like" the Beatles—just throw some jangly guitars on it, add a 4/4 drum part and some loopy bass, sing while constricting your throat. Anyone can do it.

But it’s another thing entirely to make a song that sounds "like" the Beatles that’s actually really good, something worth listening to more than once.

Andy Bopp and his band/project Myracle Brah put out eight albums of strong power pop. This song is from the first, Life on Planet Eartsnop, issued in 1988. Unfortunately, after positive beginnings—good reviews, encouraging sales—the band never really clicked with the public.

“Getting Over Delusion” has everything right—it crackles, it’s got great chords, wonderful-sounding guitars, and strong drumming, and the short bridge is just perfect. It clocks in at just 1:30, which is another point in its favor. If you like power pop, British Invasion rock, or anything with guitars, hooks, and a pulse, you could do a lot worse than Myracle Brah! They’re worthy acolytes to the altar of Big Star, the Raspberries, Badfinger, Hot Knives, The Rutles, Blue Ash, etc.
